Renew Tab and Plate

Understanding the Renewal Process

In Michigan, renewing your vehicle's registration tab and license plate is an annual requirement. This process ensures that your vehicle is legally authorized for use on public roads for another year. The Secretary of State sends out renewal notices several weeks before your registration expires, which includes your renewal fee and any additional instructions.

Online Renewal

The easiest and quickest way to renew your vehicle registration is online. You will need your renewal notice or current registration, your vehicle identification number (VIN), and a valid form of payment. The Michigan SOS website guides you through the process. Upon completion, you will receive a confirmation, and your new tab and registration document will be mailed to you.

Mail Renewal

If you prefer to renew by mail, simply follow the instructions and return the completed form included in your renewal notice. Include a check or money order for the renewal fee. Mail-in renewals should be sent well in advance of your registration's expiration date to allow for processing time.

In-Person Renewal

For those who need to renew their vehicle registration in person, you can visit any Michigan Secretary of State office. Bring your renewal notice or current registration, identification, and payment for the renewal fee. In-person visits offer the benefit of receiving your new tab immediately.

Late Renewals and Fees

It's important to renew your vehicle registration before it expires. Late renewals may incur additional fees. If your registration has expired, refrain from driving the vehicle until the renewal process is complete to avoid potential fines.
