    Notifying the Department of State

    If you've moved to a new address, it's important to update your address with the Michigan Department of State (SOS) to ensure you receive important correspondence regarding your driver's license, vehicle registration, and voting information. Michigan law requires you to update your address within 10 days of moving.

    Online Address Change

    The easiest way to update your address is online through the Michigan SOS website. You'll need to provide your driver's license or state ID number and the last four digits of your Social Security Number. This service is free, and your address will be immediately updated in the SOS system.

    Mail or In-Person Options

    If you prefer, you can also change your address by mail or in person at any SOS office. Download and complete the Change of Address form from the SOS website, or pick one up at an office. If mailing, send the form to the address provided. There is no fee for changing your address by mail or in person.

    Updating Your Driver's License or ID

    While your address with the SOS will be updated, this change does not automatically update the address on your physical driver's license or ID card. If you wish to have a new card issued with your new address, you must request this separately and may be required to pay a fee.

    Vehicle Registration and Title

    Your vehicle registration records will be updated with your new address. However, to update the address on your vehicle title, you will need to submit a separate request and may be subject to a fee. It's crucial to keep your title information accurate for any future transactions.

    Impact on Voter Registration

    Updating your address with the SOS will also update your address on your voter registration. It's essential to keep your voter registration address current to ensure you receive the correct ballot for elections in your new precinct.

    Confirming the Update

    After updating your address, you'll receive a confirmation. Keep this for your records. It's a good idea to verify that all documents and registrations associated with your name reflect your new address to avoid any issues with mail delivery or legal documents.
