Name Correction
Correcting Your Name on Michigan Documents
If your name has legally changed due to marriage, divorce, or any other reason, you must update your driver's license, state ID, and vehicle registration to reflect this change. Michigan law requires that you update your name with the Secretary of State (SOS) within 10 days of the legal name change.
Required Documentation
To update your name, you'll need to provide documentation that legally verifies the change. This could be a marriage certificate, divorce decree, or court order. Additionally, you will need to present your current driver's license or ID card.
Visit a Secretary of State Office
Name corrections must be done in person at a Michigan SOS office. Schedule an appointment and bring the required documents to process your name change. You will also need to complete any relevant forms provided by the SOS office.
Updating Your Driver's License or State ID
After verifying your documents, the SOS staff will process your name change. You will be issued a temporary license or ID at the office, and your new card with the corrected name will be mailed to you. There may be a fee associated with issuing a new license or ID card.
Updating Your Vehicle Registration
To update the name on your vehicle registration, inform the SOS staff during your appointment. You may need to provide your vehicle registration or title. There might be a fee for updating and issuing a new registration document.
Additional Steps
After updating your name with the SOS, remember to update your name on other personal records, including your social security card, bank accounts, and with other state and federal agencies as necessary. This ensures consistency across all legal documents and records.
