Plate Personalization
Customize Your Michigan License Plate
Michigan offers residents the opportunity to personalize their license plates, allowing for a unique expression of personality, interests, or affiliations on their vehicle. You can choose your own combination of letters and numbers, subject to availability and approval to ensure it meets state guidelines.
How to Apply for Personalized Plates
To apply for a personalized license plate, visit the Michigan Secretary of State website or a local office. You will need to submit an application form, detailing your desired plate configuration, along with the payment for the personalization fee in addition to the standard registration fee. The application will be reviewed for compliance with state regulations.
Guidelines for Plate Personalization
When personalizing your license plate, there are specific guidelines to follow. The character limit includes both letters and numbers, with a maximum of six characters for most plates and up to five for motorcycle plates. Prohibited are offensive or inappropriate combinations, references to illegal activities, or those that could be misleading or confused with existing plate formats.
Renewing Personalized Plates
Your personalized license plate is renewable annually, just like standard plates. The renewal process can be completed online, by mail, or in person, with a renewal notice sent to you by the Secretary of State. Ensure your personal information and vehicle registration details are up to date to receive your renewal notice on time.
Transferring Personalized Plates
If you purchase a new vehicle, you may transfer your personalized plates to the new vehicle. The transfer process involves submitting a request to the Secretary of State, along with proof of vehicle ownership and payment of a transfer fee. This ensures your personalized plate remains with you, regardless of vehicle changes.
