Historical and Authentic Plates

Eligibility for Historical and Authentic Plates

Michigan offers historical and authentic license plates for vehicles that are at least 26 years old and are preserved as collector's items. These special plates are designed for vehicles used in events like car shows, parades, and historical club activities, rather than for general transportation.

Benefits of Historical Plates

Vehicles with historical plates enjoy the privilege of participating in historical events and exhibitions without the requirement of standard registration. These plates acknowledge the vehicle's value to automotive heritage and allow owners to showcase their vehicles under special conditions recognized by the state.

Authentic Plates

For an authentic touch, Michigan also permits the use of actual license plates from the vehicle's model year, known as "Authentic Plates," for historical vehicles. These plates must be approved by the Secretary of State to ensure they are in suitable condition and do not duplicate current plate numbers.

Applying for Historical or Authentic Plates

To apply for historical or authentic plates, owners must provide proof of vehicle age, insurance, and photos of the vehicle to verify its condition and authenticity. A one-time registration fee applies, offering a cost-effective way to enjoy and display your historical vehicle.

Usage Restrictions

It's important to note that vehicles with historical or authentic plates have usage restrictions. They may not be used for daily transportation or commercial purposes. Instead, their use is limited to activities that promote the preservation and appreciation of historical vehicles.
