Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

Applying for a CDL

To operate commercial vehicles in Michigan, drivers must obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL). The application process begins with ensuring you meet the minimum requirements, including age, medical fitness, and having a valid standard driver's license. Applicants must then pass written knowledge tests to receive a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP), followed by a skills test in the specific class of commercial vehicle they intend to drive. Training through a state-approved CDL training school is highly recommended to prepare for the skills test.

CDL Classes and Endorsements

Michigan offers different classes of CDLs based on the type and weight of the commercial vehicle, as well as endorsements for specific cargo or passenger configurations. Classes include Class A for combination vehicles, Class B for single vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 or more pounds, and Class C for vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers or hazardous materials. Endorsements are additional certifications for specialized types of driving, such as hazardous materials (H) or school buses (S).

Renewing Your CDL

CDLs in Michigan must be renewed every four years. The renewal process may include submitting a current medical examiner's certificate to demonstrate continued medical fitness for commercial driving. Depending on your CDL class and endorsements, you might also need to pass certain knowledge or skills tests again. Renewals can be completed in person at a Secretary of State office, with some requirements possibly completed online or by mail.

Keeping Your CDL Active

Maintaining an active CDL requires compliance with federal and state regulations, including adhering to health standards and avoiding disqualifying driving offenses. Regularly check the requirements for your specific CDL class and endorsements to ensure you remain qualified to drive commercially.

Resources and Support

The Michigan Secretary of State offers various resources for CDL applicants and holders, including study guides, practice tests, and detailed information on the application and renewal processes. Additionally, state-approved training schools provide essential education and training for both new applicants and those seeking to upgrade their CDL or add endorsements.
