Disability Parking Placard

Applying for a Disability Parking Placard

Michigan provides disability parking placards to residents who have a qualifying temporary or permanent disability. To apply, an individual must submit a completed application that includes certification from a licensed physician, chiropractor, optometrist, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner. The certification must confirm the nature and extent of the disability and whether it is temporary or permanent.

Types of Placards

There are two main types of disability parking placards: temporary and permanent. Temporary placards are issued for a specific period, usually up to six months, and can be renewed if the disability extends beyond the original period. Permanent placards are valid for several years and must be renewed before their expiration date.

Renewing Your Disability Parking Placard

Renewal procedures for disability parking placards vary depending on whether the placard is temporary or permanent. Temporary placard holders may need to submit a new application with medical certification for renewal. Permanent placard holders will receive a renewal notice before the expiration date, which can often be processed by mail or online.

Using Your Placard

Disability parking placards must be displayed properly in the vehicle when parking in designated disability parking spaces. Placard holders are entitled to park in any space marked with the International Symbol of Accessibility. Note that placards are assigned to individuals, not vehicles, and can be used in any vehicle in which the placard holder is traveling.

Placard Abuse

Misuse or abuse of a disability parking placard, including using someone else’s placard or using a placard without the qualified individual present, is illegal and subject to fines and penalties. It is important to use the placard responsibly to ensure that parking spaces remain available for those who truly need them.
